The term „chelate“ comes from the Greek word chele — the crab's claw. This very image explains how it works: a chelating agent is a molecule that encloses metal ions as if with pincers, makes them water-soluble and allows them to be excreted via the kidneys or the bowel.
The chelating agent is administered as an intravenous infusion — directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. This allows precise dosing and a high bioavailability that cannot be achieved with oral preparations.
History and establishment: Chelation therapy was originally developed in the 1950s to treat acute lead poisoning in industrial workers, for example in battery and paint factories. Over the decades, this acute toxicological application has grown into an established method that is now also used for chronic exposure and as part of holistic detoxification concepts.

The list of relevant heavy metals is manageable, but each has specific sources of exposure and typical symptom patterns.

Which chelating agent do I use in my practice?
At Naturheilpraxis Stötzer I work with EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate) as the chelating agent. This choice has a clear legal and practical background: as an infusion, EDTA may be used freely by non-medical practitioners in Germany. Other strong chelating agents such as DMSA or DMPS require a prescription in infusion form and may only be administered by doctors. Any non-medical practitioner offering you other infusion chelating agents is operating in a grey area, and that is not something I involve my patients in.
EDTA binds particularly reliably aluminium, mercury and lead and excretes them mainly via the kidneys. So that this proceeds safely, I always combine EDTA with further components — more on that in the section on the procedure.
Vitamin C in high doses acts as a gentle chelating agent in its own right and complements the effect of EDTA. It is the considerably milder option, well suited to patients whose exposure is lower or who do not initially need the full protocol.
Alpha-lipoic acid rounds out the range with mercury, lead and cadmium, and additionally acts as one of the most powerful antioxidants known. It protects the nervous system from oxidative damage by mobilised metals before they are excreted.
How does a chelation session with me work?
A chelation session in my practice consists of four coordinated infusions, which run one after another over a total of around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours . During this time you lie comfortably in the treatment room and can read, listen to an audiobook or simply switch off.
1. Gentle alkaline infusion
An alkaline infusion comes first. It relieves the kidneys, flushes them through and prepares them for the chelation load that follows. This step is not an accessory; it is the reason the therapy can proceed safely.
2. Elimination infusion with EDTA + amino acids
The main component. EDTA binds aluminium, mercury and lead. The added amino acids support the body in coping with the elimination and provide building blocks for recovery.
3. Vitamin C + amino acids
Vitamin C is itself a mild chelating agent and works synergistically with the EDTA from step 2. In this phase the binding of residual amounts is strengthened and the oxidative stress that arises with every elimination is markedly reduced.
4. Alpha-lipoic acid
The infusion with alpha-lipoic acid concludes the session. It targets mercury, lead and cadmium specifically and is at the same time one of the most effective antioxidants known.
Interval between sessions: at least two weeks. This is not a delaying tactic but a medical necessity. The body needs this time to fully excrete the mobilised metals, allow the kidneys to recover and replenish its minerals. A faster sequence would not only be ineffective, it could overtax the body.
After the session: Drink plenty, no intensive exercise on the day of treatment, light food. Most patients go straight back to their normal daily routine after the infusion.

What does health insurance pay?
- Statutory health insurance (GKV): Chelation therapy provided by a non-medical practitioner is generally not reimbursed.
- Private health insurance (PKV) with a non-medical practitioner tariff: Often partial to full reimbursement, depending on the policy.
- Public-sector assistance (Beihilfe): Reimbursable to a limited extent, depending on the federal state and the applicable rules.

Are there side effects or risks?
An honest answer first: yes, like every medically effective therapy, chelation therapy has possible side effects. That is precisely why the preliminary diagnostics matter so much.
What can occasionally occur:
- Depletion of minerals (magnesium, zinc, calcium) — EDTA does not bind heavy metals exclusively. For this reason minerals are infused at the same time or supplemented between sessions.
- Temporary tiredness on the day of treatment or the following day — the body is working.
- Skin irritation or mild nausea in rare cases.
What is rare:
- Allergic reactions to one of the components — minimised in the first consultation through a careful case history.
When I do NOT carry out chelation therapy:
- With severe kidney disease — the kidneys must be able to excrete the mobilised metals
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding
- With acute heavy metal poisoning — that is an emergency and belongs in hospital, not in a non-medical practice
- With active severe illness or a high fever

Before the first session, blood values for liver, kidneys and general condition. Follow-up laboratory tests between sessions where required. If a laboratory value becomes conspicuous, we pause or adjust the protocol — safety before speed, always.
What does science say about chelation therapy?
Anyone looking into this subject will find both online — euphoric success stories and harsh criticism. Each side holds part of the truth.
Well documented is the use of chelation therapy in acute heavy metal poisoning — this has been established emergency medicine for over 70 years and appears in every toxicology textbook.
Moderate evidence exists for the treatment of chronic heavy metal burdens with measurable laboratory values. Studies show measurable reductions in body burden; clinical improvements vary from person to person.
The evidence is debated regarding use in the cardiovascular field. The large US TACT study (Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy, 2013) produced mixed results — slight positive effects in certain subgroups, but no clear overall picture.

How many sessions do I need?
That depends on the extent of your exposure. Most patients need between 6 and 12 sessions, spaced at least two weeks apart. A follow-up laboratory test after the first sessions shows how your body is responding and how we adjust the protocol.
What does chelation therapy really cost?
Per session 170 € (two-stage protocol) or 250 € (full four-stage protocol with alkaline infusion, EDTA plus amino acids, vitamin C plus amino acids and alpha-lipoic acid). Does health insurance cover the costs?

Can I carry out chelation therapy myself at home?
I clearly advise against this. Oral chelating agents bought online are considerably weaker, and without medical supervision and laboratory monitoring there is a risk of depleting minerals or mobilising metals into the nervous system instead of removing them from the body. Infusion therapy belongs in expert hands.
How long does a single session take?
A complete four-stage session takes in total around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours — from the first alkaline infusion through to the conclusion with alpha-lipoic acid. During this time you lie comfortably in the treatment room.
Why EDTA and not DMSA or DMPS?
In Germany, DMSA and DMPS infusions require a prescription and may only be administered by doctors. EDTA is approved as an infusion for non-medical practitioners and reliably covers the important range of aluminium, lead and mercury. Combined with vitamin C and alpha-lipoic acid, the range of action extends to cadmium.
How do I know whether I have a heavy metal burden at all?
Only laboratory analysis gives a reliable answer, either a DMPS provocation test or a urine heavy metal analysis. Online "tests" using bioresonance or pendulum methods do not produce valid results. In your first consultation we discuss which diagnostics make sense for you.
What is the difference between chelation therapy and colon hydrotherapy?
Chelation therapy acts systemically via the bloodstream on heavy metals stored in the tissue. The Colon hydrotherapy(/colon-hydro-therapie/) specifically relieves the bowel and thereby supports the routes of excretion. The two procedures complement each other well — we agree the order individually.
Do I need chelation therapy after amalgam removal?
Often it is advisable — removing the fillings only eliminates the source; the mercury stored in the tissue initially remains. A laboratory analysis a few weeks after the amalgam removal shows whether elimination is indicated.
Are there alternatives to the chelation infusion?
