In my practice I see it again and again: a patient in her mid-forties or early fifties measures her blood pressure more or less by chance and is surprised by readings that were never an issue before. Yet seemingly nothing has changed in her daily life. Why is that?
The menopause and blood pressure are connected
With the onset of the menopause, oestrogen levels fall. Oestrogen dilates blood vessels and supports their elasticity. When this effect diminishes, blood pressure can rise gradually. Sleep problems, persistent stress and a changed distribution of body weight in this phase of life can also play their part. Many women initially notice nothing at all, because raised blood pressure does not hurt.
What you can do yourself
- Measure your blood pressure regularly, ideally in the morning while at rest and seated
- Daily movement; even a brisk walk does your blood vessels good
- Make sure you get enough sleep and take deliberate periods of relaxation
- Use salt sparingly and maintain a healthy weight
When you should take action
Persistently raised readings belong in medical assessment. In addition, a look at the blood values is worthwhile: magnesium, homocysteine, cholesterol and other markers give an indication of the state of the heart and blood vessels. These are precisely the values I examine as part of my Health check-ups together with you. You can also find more on this subject on my page Cardiovascular system.
Do you have questions or would you like to discuss your values at your leisure? Please feel free to arrange an appointment.
